Annelise Vuorinen is an emerging multidisciplinary artist from Sydney/Eora nearing completion of a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) at the National Art School.

Vuorinen’s practice-led research considers how the materially precarious and absurd can conjure narratives of attraction + repulsion and nonhuman agency. Through an experimental studio practice of melting, fusing and re-configuring, the resulting body of work communicates the capacity for self-organising matter and a language of bodily interaction.

Her investigation draws on ideas of radical materialities to explore the possibilities and limitations of containment. Vuorinen employs the use of bioplastics, soap and wax to stage scenarios of congealing amongst metal structures and props, allowing materials to act via their own trajectories and inclinations as they sweat, warp and stiffen. Vuorinen’s studio practice is grounded in the affective dimensions of the Abject to examine the relationship between repulsive/attractive materials and bodily encounters.

‘A subversion of materials occurs in my works, wherein soap slabs and bioplastic fragments are contorted and affixed in different arrangements. Their tendency to sag, melt, solidify and become brittle evokes a material persistence that is central to my practice.’
